The coolest thing about social media is its global nature. For me, it’s great to go to bed and know people are communicating, opinions are being debated, and news is being created and shared. When I get up, there’s always something fresh to see, hear or think about. And it’s great to see it continue all day long. There’s life in every part of the planet and we can now see and feel this energy, and ultimately become part of it more easily than ever before. No matter how remotely located we may be.
We can now reach out to people everywhere. And they, to us. We can hear from people in real time, and share their experiences and emotions first hand. Right here and now. As and when it happens.
How remarkable is that?! What else in today’s day and age better shows us that we are one population, not many nation states?
We all live on the one planet. Everything, everywhere can and will impact us and we can impact everything everywhere. A line on a map is no reason to limit our awareness of, support for or involvement in global affairs. The time of claiming ignorance, the time of claiming passivity as a virtue, is in the past.
Today is a global age and we live in a global society. So let’s act like the global citizens we are! Let’s look at not only transforming our behaviours but also transforming our existing structures, outdated company hierarchies, outdated nation states, tax systems, voting systems, educational systems…the list goes on. And why should we bother? Clearly, to create a better world for all of us.
This ‘one population’ or global view is driven by people and enabled by social media. My life has certainly become even richer through connecting and meeting with lots of different people around the world on a daily basis. It’s wonderful. These global connections and the global sharing is a significant driver behind setting up Jobsite’s FreshThinking series and my spending the next couple of days with Scott Stratton and Amanda Hite. How awesome is it to spend the next 72 hours with them??
No one government or single NGO will be able to solve all the global challenges on their own. It’s down to us. You. And I.
Knowing that the world is full of decent, intelligent, caring people and being able to tap into this, the biggest talent pool of them all, gives me a positive outlook indeed. And a knowledge that each one of us can contribute towards a better tomorrow. We are living in a world where we are moving from consumption to communication and co-creation. Let’s not sit on the side lines. Let’s get involved and start creating a better reality.
